1. Worry Down

When Worry Strikes:

We’ve all felt it—the grip of worry, whether it’s a whisper or a roar in our consciousness. In these moments, our instinct might be to dissect our worries, seeking causes and solutions and overthinking. But here’s an alternative approach: the Worry Down Technique.

How to use:

When worry arises, instead of spiraling into overthinking, imagine transferring this worry from your mind down through your body. Visualize moving this energy towards the base of your body, grounding it into the Earth. Picture it like holding down a balloon that’s eager to float away. It takes effort, but it’s possible.

Release and Observe:

After briefly holding this grounded state—about 3- 6 seconds—release the effort. You’ll notice the worry’s energy naturally rises, becoming less restrictive. With practice, you’ll find that worries become less daunting, and you can access your inner resources more readily.

Personalize Your Practice:

Feel free to experiment with this technique. Some find it helpful to use their hands to guide the energy downward, while others incorporate  long breaths while the worry goes down. Find what resonates with you.

The most impactful techniques are often the simplest

2. The 'I Am Safe' Technique for Tranquil Sleep

Setting the Scene for Sleep:

Assuming you’re following a bedtime routine and are now lying in bed, this is the perfect moment to implement a calming tool for sleep—the ‘I Am Safe’ technique.

The Technique:

As you settle into bed, hold one of your thumbs with your other hand, a gesture that offers comfort and is known in Taoist practices to calm the mind. Rest your hands on your belly and gently affirm to yourself, “I am safe.” It’s a powerful message, reassuring your body, much like comforting a child.

Embracing Safety and Relaxation:

After affirming your safety, take a moment to feel the security of your surroundings—the comfort of your bed, the safety of your home. Allow your body to relax, your breath to slow. Then, release your thumb and let your body naturally drift towards sleep.

Conclusion: Simplicity in Practice

Through years of meditation practice, I’ve learned that sometimes the simplest tools can be the most transformative. I hope these techniques not only integrate seamlessly into your routine but also, with time and practice, deepen to transform worry into a source of strength and sleep into a relaxed time of rejuvenation.

Meditation nourishes the mind in the same way that food nourishes the body.
